Haitian Education Society
Advancing education for marginalized children of Jacmel, Haiti at the St Joseph Family's Lekòl Sen Trinite!
The Haitian Education Society (HES) is a Calgary-based NGO (CRA#801781659RR0001) that supports Lekòl Sen Trinite (LST), a school serving the most marginalized families and children of Jacmel, Haiti. Currently, close to 250 students are enrolled in pre-Kindergarten Montessori through Grade Nine.
our purpose
This wee lad, and others like him, give HES purpose. On Jean Claudy’s first day attending Lekòl Sen Trinite’s Montessori pre-kindergarten class back in 2011 he was a frightened little boy, as you can see from this photo. In June 2023 he graduated as a member of LST’s first Grade Nine class. His education has been sponsored each year by an HES donor. How proud we are of what he and his classmates have achieved.
our activites
Outside of class Jean Claudy learned to drum and play the guitar, while other classmates trained in karate, gained knowledge of cooking, or became skilled at drawing. This extra-curricular programming provided students with the opportunity for informal social time while learning a new skill.
Students at LST are supported by a dedicated team of teachers and instructors who also welcome the occasion to be learners themselves thus gaining new skills and understandings.
our vision
The Haitian Education Society (HES) focuses its time, energy and resources on supporting the students and their teachers at Lekòl Sen Trinite, in Jacmel, Haiti in Montessori Kindergarten through Grade Nine. HES also works with our Haitian partners to find sponsorship for its graduates so they may continue their education at secondary school and beyond. Their continuing education is crucial to our “Closing the Circle” vision. Once their education is complete and they are working, they have been asked to sponsor a student at Lekòl Sen Trinite. Eventually, all LST students will be sponsored by Haitians and the School will be self-sustaining. This is a lofty goal, but given the unrest in Haiti and a diaspora of the educated, Haiti’s future may very well depend on the success of students like Jean Claudy and his classmates. Thank you for being part of the HES community that is supporting this endeavor!
The Haitian Education Society (HES) is a non-governmental organization registered under the Society Act of Alberta. We obtained charitable status in 2011 through the Canadian Revenue Agency of the federal government. A seven-member volunteer Board of Directors governs HES. We meet regularly throughout the year to share progress on our strategic plan. Our fiscal year-end is June 30th.
Traveling to and within Haiti is currently not safe for us and puts our partners at risk. We look forward to spending time in Haiti again, however, as we recognize the importance of nurturing our partnership and spending time with the students and teachers at Lekòl Sen Trinite.
